About

The Grafton Cycle Club is centred in Grafton in Northern NSW. and serves members from Grafton and the surrounding Clarence Valley region. The club held its first ever race on July 2nd, 1892, making it one of the oldest continuing clubs in Australia. Our current membership numbers around 75 and we are affiliated with Cycling Australia through Cycling NSW. We hold regular club road races through both summer and winter and always welcome visiting riders. See our race program pages for information on where and when to race. The club is currently working with the Clarence Valley Council in the construction of a dedicated criterium track for training and racing. The track, to be located within the city of Grafton, will add an extra dimension to the club’s ability to race, train and to help inexperienced and younger riders gain valuable cycle skills.Grafton Cycle Club also organises two major events each year - the Jacaranda Criterium (held in conjunction with Grafton’s famous Jacaranda Festival in October-November) and the mid-year Mauri Kautto 100km Teams Time Trial. See our Winter calendar for the exact dates for these events. The famous 228 Grafton to Inverell classic starts in Grafton in September or October each year. This great event is independently organised in conjunction with Inverell Cycle ‘n’ Tri Club. The Grafton Cycle Club is always well represented, both in the field and in various aspects of assisting and running of the event.

Fischer Park - checking the race programme, 1925

To celebrate our long history, the club has asked members to contribute as many stories as they can on club activities of the past. We hope to establish an informal club history in this way. Our first contribution is from the Sydney Mail Newspaper, July 9th, 1892. A short article recording the running and results of our first ever race:

Our Grafton correspondent writes on July2 :- The first cycling contest amongst the members of the Grafton Cycle Club took place on Saturday, when a run from the common to Fisher Park, a distance of about six miles, was negotiated. Six competed, and a fine race was won by R. Thompson, 50 seconds, handicap, with J. O’Meally, 5 minutes, 2; and E. A. Neville, 3 minutes, 3. O’Meally rode an ordinary, and the others safety machines. O’Meally was headed by Thompson in the last quarter mile. Thompson secures the gold medal prize of the club, a silver medal going to the second man.
