4th April 2013 – Grafton Cycle Club Race Report

In a frantic finishing sprint of the six strongest in the race, Chris Cropper edged out Jye Reardon for the win. Third was Howard Avery, then Greg Robertson, who is hanging on to his excellent form, Brad Cooper and Colton Tooth was sixth. Then came a courageous Rhonda Thew, John Harrison and Tim Noble.

In something of a boil-over the lone scratchman, Matthew White, failed in his bid to catch the bunch in front of him. Instead that “chopping block” bunch of Chris Cropper, Howard Avery, Jye Reardon, Colton Tooth and Steve Wiblen set off just thirty seconds before White, but they did so with fierce determination. Matt White wins Summer Series Point Score.

Matt White showed his consistent, and excellent form, by recently winning the Summer Point Score series. In a remarkable season Matt beat Jye Reardon, then came Michael While and Garry Reardon.

Not too far behind the father/son combinations from the White and Reardon families were Kelsey and Dion Wilkes. Then there is the O’Connor duo of Dylan and Paul regularly doing battle and, until recently, Brady and Jon Ingram.

But the Summer series belonged to Matt White. Always riding off the “scratch” mark where the best and boldest riders take their place (apologies to A B Patterson), Matt was strong, fast and consistent.

1st and 3rd place int the recent Summer points series, Matt and Michael White.

When the 25 riders faced the starter at Coutts Crossing on Saturday they were unaware of each other’s handicap. It was a mass start over forty km. The course took the riders through the village, into Kangaroo Creek Road, Lower Kangaroo Creek Road and back to the village, with four laps to cover.

The Club welcomed Vicki James, having her first race, and Brendan Gorman from the Coffs Harbour Cycling Club. Glen McPhillips, David Brown and Simon King were on hand to manage the racing.

There were plenty of nerves on the starting line, with the mass-start sure to apply lots of pressure on riders who would normally be starting well ahead of the faster riders.
